Water Line is a new book of camera-less photographs by Stefanie Motta. Her images are made by exposing 4"x5" color negative film inside pierced plastic bags that have been submerged or floated in various bodies of water. The light and water that seep into these dark chambers leave their trace as otherworldly abstractions, yet record each photographic event in accurate detail; scratch marks where an image tumbled over shore pebbles and sand, finger prints left as film was plucked from its bag, and specks of grit adhered to the image surface ground the work in each photographic moment captured.
Water is a rich and complex subject matter and Motta draws on these associations, calling to mind the spiritual, the energetic, and the environmental in a time when our precious aquatic ecosystems are becoming increasingly threatened.
Stefanie Motta is a Minneapolis based photographer and educator, whose art practice explores ephemerality and spirituality through alternative and experimental image making processes. She earned her BFA in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art, and her MFA in Photography from The University of Minnesota. Motta practices yoga and meditation daily and lives with her partner Wes and their dog Blue.
Stefania C Motta is a fiscal year 2016 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
