Former chair of MCAD's Design Department, Professor Mroczek retired at the end of the Fall 2007 semester after more than 30 years at the College. In addition to teaching thousands of MCAD students over three decades, he also served as director of the Asia/Pacific Institute and director of New Media Research. Russ Mroczek passed away May of this year.

Apart from his love of design, Professor Mroczek had a passion for Chinese and Japanese art and cultural studies and frequently traveled and lectured in Japan, Korea, Singapore and China, where he studied traditional Chinese painting. "His travels as a lecturer and exhibitor in China allowed our students to have a deeper understanding and firsthand knowledge of the world," Garrett said.

Professor Mroczek was born in Holyoke, Mass., and received his BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art. He was a Fulbright Exchange Lecturer in 1973-74, and some of his many roles outside of MCAD include vice president/director of design and advertising for the China Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine; vice president of and director of graphic design for The Leonard Parker Associates, Architects; and partner/co-founder of Context Design Associates.
