show image

Opening Reception:
Saturday, April 28, 6-9pm
Show Runs:
April 28 - June 2

Peculiarities is a new experiment at Soo Visual Arts Center, a five-week residency in which Mary Gibney will create an evolving exhibition onsite. She will be working in the gallery throughout the five weeks, sometimes during our open hours to create the exhibition, with a closing reception for the public to see the final results.

Gibney’s paintings and collages explore life on the fringes, and in turn are self portraits of a sort making, vulnerable and honest her own feelings of being an outsider. She is interested in the spectacle, her subjects embracing their damaged beauty. Her work is a way of seeing through the layers of existence, tinged with voyeurism, and deeply rooted in humanities desire to create images of ourselves. Brushstrokes, mistakes, layers of color – Gibney likes showing process and the repetition of trying to figure things out layer by layer.

Mary Gibney lives and works in Minneapolis. She received a BFA from the University of Minnesota. Gibney has exhibited in a multitude of exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Most recently in a group exhibition at Gallery 71 in Minneapolis.
