Altoids’ Curiously Strong Collection

May 19 - June 19, 2003

The Curiously Strong Collection was created in 1998 by Altoids®, The Curiously Strong Mints®, to honor and support today’s most talented, emerging visual artists working in America. To assemble this unusual Collection, each year Altoids challenges a panel of highly-regarded artists, curators, gallerists and journalists to identify emerging artists whose paintings, photography, works on paper, sculpture, videos and digital media are “curious,” “strong” and “original.” Panel alumni include David Byrne, Renee Cox, Dave Hickey, Jeff Koons, David Ross, Douglas Fogle, Lisa Phillips and Dan Cameron.

Every year, Altoids tours 20-25 new acquisitions to galleries across the country. At the end of each tour, Altoids donates the artwork to the permanent collection of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. The Altoids Curiously Strong Collection, which after five years includes 110 original works, showcases pieces by now well-known artists such as Laylah Ali, D.L. Alvarez, Jessica Craig-Martin, Sam Durant, Yun-Fei Ji, David Rathman, Barry McGee and Dario Robleto.
