Unflinching facades explores the intersections of Carolina Borja and Jesse Matthew Petersen’s art. Both artists use layering and obfuscation in their process to convey larger concepts of manipulation and control. Collage, and multiple layers of alterations lend to a narrative of power structures and hidden agendas in both bodies of work.

The Mirage of Damnatio Memoriae is a play on the Latin phrase damnatio memoriae, the condemnation of memory, an act of dishonor passed by the Roman Senate to punish traitors by erasing them from historical record. Matthew Yaeger uses this term to reflect the duality of his work, recognizing that this act of excising someone from history simultaneously embeds a new narrative into the collective consciousness.

Art Is Why I Wake Up In The Morning is worked inspired by Sherry Muyuan He’s recent trip to Tokyo in early 2017 where she learned how to make her own paper with hand made stencil designs, and the art of origami. The experiences were a mixture of her seeking out new skills and knowledge, along with happenstance – a chance meeting with a stranger resulted in origami lessons.
