Art Is Why I Wake Up In The Morning:
New Work by Sherry Muyuan He

Opening Reception:

Friday, April 14, 2017-6-9PM

Show Runs:

April 14 - May 20

Art Is Why I Wake Up In The Morning is worked inspired by Sherry Muyuan He’s recent trip to Tokyo in early 2017 where she learned how to make her own paper with hand made stencil designs, and the art of origami. The experiences were a mixture of her seeking out new skills and knowledge, along with happenstance – a chance meeting with a stranger resulted in origami lessons.

Muyuan He is drawn to the concept of sharing knowledge, a form of communication that forges connections with others. Enacting a shared narrative through learning is a central interest of hers and she connects that to food another instance of forging a communal experience. Her exhibition will take the form of an ongoing art making experience, supplemented with a workshop Sherry He will facilitate during the opening of the exhibition.

This workshop will teach people four types of bookbinding techniques through making four different kinds of breakfast-food books: Japanese stab binding for toast (choices are white bread, whole wheat and marble rye), saddle stitch for fruit (choices are apples and oranges), accordion folds for cheese (choices are bleu cheese, cheddar and swiss) and brass binding for fried eggs. All of the Ingredients and tools will be provided for the workshops and through out the exhibition. People can sit at a dining table and make food books of their choice and take them home with compostable sandwich bags.

Sherry Muyuan He is currently in the MFA visual arts program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She received a BA from Macalester College with a major in Studio Arts and a minor in Music. This will be her first solo exhibition outside of school. 2017 marks the 15th year of SooVAC exhibiting work by MCAD MFA candidates.
