Broken: New works by Greg Gossel
Saturday, October 9th, 6-9pm
October 9 - November 29, 2009
Greg Gossel’s paintings are poignant tributes to the decades of history that is discovered when one peels back the layers of posters coating the time weathered buildings of urban decay. His work is a montage of pop culture history; cultural fragments ranging from comic book characters, pulp novel covers, tabloids and girly magazines. Beneath the vivid color palette there is a darker tone to Gossel’s work, which explores media manipulation and exploitation with a keen skill and polish that celebrates as it simultaneously condemns.
His pieces are a labor intensive process of building layers of content on every canvas; painting, sanding, washes, collage and lacquers slowly build until the final composition reveals itself. Broken will consist of new original works by Gossel, including a site specific piece.
Greg Gossel was born in western Wisconsin. His work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and abroad, including San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Milan, and London. He currently lives and works in Minneapolis. This will be his first solo exhibition in Minnesota.
