Half Awake: New work by Sarah Nakano

Opening Reception:

Saturday, November 13th, 6-9pm

Show Runs:

November 13 - December 31, 2010

Exploring the self, dreams and the mysteries of the subconscious prominently play into Sarah Nakano’s work. She subtlety manipulates lighting effects to recreate the feeling of dream states, hazy moments where reality and fantasy collide. Half Awake utilizes a variety of different mediums to unravel and document states of consciousness; an intensely personal collection drawn from Nakano’s own art journals and dream diaries.

Nakano allows instinct to be her guide creating maps in a stream of consciousness that inspires the direction the artwork will take. She uses theatrical lighting, smoke devices and handmade lens filters to create the haunting atmospheres prevalent in her photographs. Her influences range from Yoko Ono to Gregory Crewdson, David Lynch to her school friends. This exhibition will take the viewer on a journey through images frozen in time, captured before they are able to dissolve into only the faintest memory.

Sarah Nakano is currently a senior at Mounds Park Academy in St. Paul. Her studies also include The Oxbow School in California, Parsons the New School for Design in New York, and Minneapolis College of Art and Design, as well as being an active member of the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council since 2009. Nakano was selected by a panel to participate in SooVAC’s inaugural teen arts exhibition, SooFUZE and was then chosen to participate in SooVAC’s first residency program culminating in this solo exhibition. She has exhibited her work in various juried group shows throughout the Twin Cities including Les Farrington Best 100 and an art auction at Casket Arts Community as the featured student artist. This is Sarah’s first solo exhibition.

This exhibition and residency program was made possible by a grant from the Best Buy Children's Foundation.
