spring_break: New Work by Lindsay Smith

Opening Reception:

Saturday, April 11, 2015, 6-10PM

Show Runs:

April 11 - May 23, 2015

There is tranquility to Lindsay Smith’s mixed media watercolor landscapes, scenes that appear to capture moments of quiet reflection. In her new exhibition, spring_break, the work reveals the ordinary in a future where civilization has collapsed…the aftermath of a worldwide breakdown that dismantles our traditional concepts of routine and daily existence. Smith is drawn to exploring the intimate affects of such a catastrophic event, the impact on individual lives and how it might change the way humans perceive the built and natural spaces they inhabit.

Her work captures moments in between struggle, environments stark yet beautiful, with figures continuing to create homes and pursuing other simple acts of survival not too far removed from the familiar everyday. As watercolor renderings the pieces have a hazy dreamlike quality teetering between realism and abstraction, crumbling buildings melt into the hills and rocky terrains, allowing the medium to evoke an uncertain nostalgia. Her work is not about chaos or destruction but instead discovery, evolution and acceptance as her subjects navigate the ruins and artifacts of an existence now lost to history.

Lindsay Smith received her BFA from the University of Minnesota. Lindsay was a 2008/9 Jerome Fellow and will be included in the upcoming Midwest Biennial at the Soap Factory. This is will be Smith’s second solo exhibition; her previous solo outing was also at Soo Visual Arts Center.
