Storm Surge by Megan Vossler is about the literal and metaphorical power of water; specifically, ocean swells, and waves. Vossler will explore the power and resilience of both nature and ourselves in this large scale multi panel watercolor.
Drawing has always been Megan Vossler’s primary practice, especially large-scale graphite drawings on paper that can envelop one’s field of vision, spanning ten feet wide at times. Her work has always focused on meticulous details and larger scales to allow for the many small areas of detail for storytelling. Vossler is interested in the metaphorical and narrative possibilities of figurative landscape representation. Her work pursues an open-ended narrative, giving living personifications to the trees, cliffs, oceans and rivers that can simultaneously act independently while also reacting to the populations that pass through them. In these drawings, the landscape and its inhabitants are mutually engaged: they reflect and respond to each other. Threatening circumstances and the uncertainty of help have been ongoing themes of hers, and the images she creates are often evidence of unseen forces or earlier events that have left visible traces. Vossler is drawn to the remnants of catastrophe, and the possibility of regeneration, as a way to celebrate resilience: in the ways we incorporate (both physically and mentally) our histories, adjust, adapt, and persevere, and the ways nature does the same.
Megan Vossler received her BA from Brown University, and her MFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her artwork has been exhibited at museums and galleries around the country, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
