SooLOCAL (a division of Soo Visual Arts Center) at 3506 Nicollet Presents:

The muse becomes the master by returning the gaze in a series of new self portraits inspired by the painting, Reclining Odalisque, or Harmony in Red, by Henri Matisse (1927) at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The artist explores a personal journey within art history, exploring topics of feminism, gender, and cultural identity with oil paint on canvas. She inserts herself into the art historical canon by appropriating her own image into the work. The work is a journey to find personal narrative by painting herself into iconic images of femininity, as a means to celebrate an empowered female identity while simultaneously allowing for a raw vulnerability.

As companion works to her paintings in Harmony in Red, Paige will also display digital pieces she created with #DrawArt, an iPad program she co-developed as a museum engagement tool, that developed through her interest in using new media as a means to inspire greater audience participation in the arts. #DrawArt is an artist driven projection experience with multi-user mobile companion functions that extend the museum experience with enhanced content and live art video playback. Her oil paintings are rendered by using oil paint directly from the tube, worked into the canvas with her hands as the painting implements, connecting process and performance. This technique of creating work is translated into the #DrawArt program as a similar feeling of organic movement relieves itself in the video playback.
